WHAT IS AYERS SENSORY INTEGRATION® (ASI)

Ayers Sensory Integration (ASI) is a theory and therapeutic approach created by Dr. A. Jean Ayers. It explains how our brains process sensory information from the world around us, allowing us to interact with our environment in a meaningful way. The core idea of ASI is that our brains need to effectively register, modulate, and discriminate between different sensations. This includes input from all our senses: touch, movement, body position, sight, sound, taste, smell, and internal bodily feelings knows as interoception. When sensory integration is working properly, it helps us to participate in daily activities and develop important skills. ASI is an evidenced-based intervention often used with children who have autism, but has also been found to be effective with many other populations including those with ADHD, developmental delays, neurodevelopmental conditions, and anxiety and other mood disorders.
